Watering schedules that survive summer

GGREEN · 14 OCT 2026

Keeping a UAE garden healthy in summer takes more than increasing the irrigation timer. A useful watering schedule considers the plants, soil, sunlight and the amount of water your system actually delivers.

For gardens in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, use regular checks to guide adjustments rather than applying one fixed schedule to every area.

When should you water?

Early morning is a good time for routine watering, helping reduce evaporation compared with watering during the hottest part of the day. Direct water towards the soil around the roots wherever practical.

However, do not leave a plant with dry soil struggling simply because its scheduled watering time has passed. Check its condition and water when needed.

Separate plants with different needs

A lawn, a newly planted tree and a small terrace pot should not automatically receive the same watering programme.

When reviewing your irrigation, identify separate areas for:

  • Natural grass.

  • Established trees and shrubs.

  • Newly installed planting.

  • Pots and raised planters.

  • Plants with lower water requirements.

Ask your irrigation installer whether the zones match these different needs.

Check soil before changing the timer

A dry-looking surface does not tell you how much moisture remains around the roots. Check beneath the surface in several locations, taking care around roots and buried irrigation pipes.

Compare sunny and shaded areas. Check near the water outlets and between them to see whether moisture is reaching the planting evenly.

If the soil remains wet, investigate drainage or excessive watering before adding more water. If parts remain dry, check the irrigation coverage.

How many minutes should irrigation run?

There is no reliable universal answer. Runtime depends on the outlet flow rate, number of outlets, soil conditions and the area being watered.

For example, a dripper rated at four litres per hour delivers approximately two litres in 30 minutes under its rated operating conditions. That calculation describes the outlet’s delivery; it does not establish how much water a particular plant needs.

Ask your installer to explain the starting schedule for each zone and how to adjust it after checking the soil.

Give new planting extra attention

Newly planted trees, shrubs and turf need an establishment plan. Do not assume their watering needs are the same as those of established planting nearby.

Confirm the initial care instructions with your supplier. Review the root-ball moisture and surrounding soil, and arrange follow-up checks as the planting settles in.

Monitor pots separately

Containers can dry out faster than garden beds. During hot weather, check their moisture daily, especially in exposed locations, but water according to need rather than automatically.

Make sure drainage holes are clear. A shaded pot and a small pot in full sun may need very different care.

Inspect the irrigation system

Run each zone while someone is present and look for:

  • Blocked or disconnected drippers.

  • Broken sprinkler heads.

  • Water spraying onto paving or walls.

  • Leaks, pooling or runoff.

  • Plants receiving little or no water.

Repair faults before extending the runtime for the whole garden. A longer cycle will not fix a blocked outlet.

Frequently asked questions

Should every plant be watered daily in summer?

No single frequency suits every plant. Containers and new planting may need close monitoring, while established planting has different requirements. Check the soil and follow plant-specific care instructions.

Does an automatic timer replace garden checks?

No. A timer follows its settings even if an outlet becomes blocked or the garden’s needs change. Inspect the system and review the programme regularly.

Should I keep summer settings all year?

Review them as conditions change. Reassess soil moisture, plant growth and irrigation performance before adjusting the schedule.
